Back in Europe. I am doing some fieldwork out of England for a few weeks. I will tell you about it afterwards (since you never know who’s on the internet). I was awake for so so long Soren, getting to London and then to here. 24 hours, then 5 sleeping, then another 24 hours. I felt myself battling demons in the airport. I started blaring K-Pop Demon Hunters songs and drinking coffee to keep awake. And yet I still can’t fall asleep on planes.
Where I am now is in Spain and it’s very nice. The other girls at field school are nice, all other Americans but one. Spain is very hot but breezy, which makes it better. Its landscape is like California. The buildings are very pretty. I’m excavating a post-Medieval gravesite. I’ve inhaled so much corpse dust. Do you count that as cannibalism? The others don’t since it’s unintentional, but I think consumption is consumption. Some of the bodies still have fabric and hair, incredible compared to the Classical world. You only get that in Egypt. I would send you pictures, but I wouldn’t want to share photos of corpses online, since it feels disrespectful. I’ll send you funner photos after I leave. The food is very nice — vegetarian options are not the best, so I’ve had lots of plain cheese+bread types of meals, I also have lots of ice cream. I’ve discovered a single alcohol I enjoy: restaurant-quality sangria. It just tastes like juice. I’ve also tried two-euro grocery store quality sangria, which I think is bad. Still haven’t ever been properly drunk since starting college in Europe, which I think makes me an outlier — I just find the idea of self-dispossession too scary. Especially around people. Also it’s expensive: one bad drink in England can buy you five cartons of orange juice. And which is better for you? I probably sound so boring, but I just don’t understand it. Maybe three anxiety disorders just does that to you, lol. Also, we went to a Mexican place (in Spain! Very strange) and I had the worst quesadilla. Very funny.
I’ve seen many lovely things and will show you soon — not next Friday, since I will still be here. You will see when I’m back. I love you so much.
With love,
Alice
P.S I’ve figured out a way to get free WiFi on the plane ride to London for a short period of time. Life can be good.
